What are some karaoke singing tips

Karaoke on the PC: 9 programs and tips

Have you invited friends and don't feel like playing a board game? Give karaoke a try. Singing to instrumental playbacks was invented in Japan in the early 1970s and has also been known in this country since Sony's PlayStation game Singstar. You do not need a game console or special devices, your PC and our tips and tools are sufficient.

Karaoke on the computer: you need that

Before we get into the karaoke software, let's take a quick look at the hardware: To sing karaoke at home, you need a computer or notebook with a sound card and speakers. If you want it to sound better, connect the computer to an amplifier and good speakers.

You will also need a microphone. With the notebook you can use the built-in one, but that sounds anything but good. You connect the microphone either via the jack plug or via USB. There are different models; it starts with prices around ten euros.

Tip: A good microphone for karaoke on the computer is, for example, the Capo Desk & Hand Microphone from Speedlink, price around 12 euros.

If several players are to sing at the same time, you need an adapter to connect several microphones. These can be had for a few euros.

If everything is connected and functional, all you need is a karaoke program. We present these tools and the online alternatives below:

1. KaraFun Player: subscription to music

The KaraFun Player can be operated intuitively after the download, you can start singing straight away. Over 20,000 songs are integrated, from Helene Fischer to Robbie Williams to Frank Sinatra, the Doctors, Karel Gott and Depeche Mode.

In order to trill this in full length, you have to register and take out a subscription. For 4.99 euros you get two days of access - enough for a party. There is also a subscription for 7.99 euros per month with unlimited access. You can also call up the songs through Android and iPhone apps or access them through the browser. KaraFun can handle the most common audio and video formats: KAR or MIDI files are typical for karaoke songs.

You create playlists and search for specific criteria, such as songs in a language, for ballads or duets, as well as for genres and artists. You can adjust the pitch and tempo of each song and record your singing. You can also control the lead and background vocals individually.

The special split window function is practical for a party: you can use it to transmit the video with the karaoke hit to a television or projector. In contrast to other tools, KaraFun looks more modern, it does not overwhelm the user with too many setting options. Another advantage: It is in German.

2. Karaoke 5: Sing-along player with a few free songs

The free Karaoke 5 looks pretty antiquated, but it offers tons of options. At the beginning, the English-language tool seems rather confusing, which is also due to some non-self-explanatory operating icons.

Once downloaded, you'll find a handful of full-length songs. You will start singing right away. If this is not enough for you, you can use the search function to find license-free tracks on the Internet that you can play with the tool. You can play them individually or create playlists.

The program supports various audio formats, such as KAR, but also MP3 and WMA. In terms of video formats, Karaoke 5 can handle MP4, AVI or FLV, for example. There are also two free versions of the tool for 33 and 155 euros per year with additional functions. A metronome is then integrated, for example, and you can also open the karaoke window on the television.

3. KaraokeMedia Home: easy to use karaoke machine

KaraokeMedia Home differs from other karaoke tools in its appealing visual design: It is reminiscent of iTunes, is very clear and easy to use.

Disadvantage: The tool is in English, but actually comes from Spain. Sometimes the developers seem to have forgotten to translate, for example with confirmation windows.

You adjust the sound via equalizer, can be cheered or booed by an imaginary audience depending on the vocal performance and create playlists. There are no songs to try out at the beginning, but you can access your own karaoke songs. If you register for free, you will have access to 40 songs.

KaraokeMedia Home offers pieces for download on its website, price: one euro per song. Alternative: You take out a subscription with the provider. For ten euros per month you have access to the database with 12,000 songs. Record your singing by clicking on the record button - also as a video if you wish. You can share this on Facebook if you dare?

4. KaraokeKanta: with songs by Abba and more

The KaraokeKanta tool is confusing at first glance. You can find the button for inserting songs only with difficulty (a small folder symbol in the lower third). What is practical, however, is that you can download a song package at the same time as downloading the tool, consisting of 15 songs, from Abba to Cranberries. The sound takes a bit of getting used to because - as is often the case with karaoke - it is a replayed version.

But don't worry: you will still recognize the melodies. You start singing straight away, record your singing and change the tone and tempo if you wish. You don't have much more options. In the trial version, you can only sing out songs. If you want to have the songs in full length, you have to buy the program for around 90 euros.

5. Karaoke Sing-n-Burn: Record vocals

With Karaoke Sing-n-Burn you not only sing the songs to the instrumental playback, but you record your results and burn them. You can adjust the tempo and volume in each track or add an echo. If you want, you can convert the end result and get a WAV file instead of a MIDI file. You can then save them on a CD using the integrated burn function.

Practical: After installation, an assistant will guide you through setting up the English-language program. Then open a piece, record your singing - done. The tool looks a bit old-fashioned. To test it for 14 days you need to register for free. To keep going, buy it for $ 38.

6. Siglos Karaoke Player / Recorder: Recreate CD tracks yourself

You can test the Siglos Karaoke Player / Recorder without restrictions, but it only plays the first two minutes of a song. If you want more, you have to buy the English language program for $ 50. Practical: You can use the search function to search for new pieces online; that works best here. To do this, go to Tools in the menu bar and select Search for karaoke on the Internet.

Download the songs to your hard drive and open them via file and open. You create your own playlists with the player and record your singing.

Siglos looks quite antiquated, but the tool has another special feature: You can open karaoke songs from YouTube in the program - and sing along directly. In addition, the English-language tool opens songs directly from CDs and plays them, but then without text specification. You can still sing along and record the result.

Annoying: With the unregistered version, constant pop-up windows with a purchase request are irritating.

7. Ultrastar Deluxe: Open Source

The specialty of Ultrastar Deluxe: The karaoke game is an open source tool. That means it is being developed further by a community. That's why the program is free, but you have to find the songs to sing yourself. Ultrastar Deluxe is visually reminiscent of the model Singstar. This also applies to the functions: Ultrastar is one of the very few karaoke programs that allows you to sing with several players at the same time. The more precisely you hit the note, the more points you get.

Another plus: You can create your own karaoke songs with the German-language program. Disadvantage: The installation of the tool does not always work smoothly, especially under Windows 10 there are sometimes problems. But the community is there to help.

8. Karaoke with no downloads

You don't necessarily have to install a program for karaoke - you can also use online portals to sing songs. These are communities where you can publish your vocal performances directly and have them rated and commented on by others. The portals are now all in English, the German karaoke platform Mikestar has been offline since the end of 2011.

At SingSnap.com you have to register for free and configure the microphone and camera: Then you have access to some free songs. But you have to fish them out first. To do this, click Sing & Record and either search for an artist or browse through the genres. With Bob Dylan, for example, there are some freely accessible songs. If you want, record yourself singing directly on the webcam. The text runs on the left side of the browser window, on the right you see yourself. You then share the results on the page - and you can also see how the other members have sung there.

If you want to have access to all songs, you have to take out a gold membership, the price of which depends on the duration. You pay $ 5 for a week and $ 96 for a year. You will search in vain for German songs in the portal.

A site with a similar offer is karaokegame.com: Here the subscription costs 5.90 euros per month. Sing ten songs for free at thekaraokechannel.com. Then, once you've tasted blood, pay just under five US dollars for two-day access to the entire 10,000-song library, or ten US dollars a month or 60 US dollars a year. You can also register for free at redkaraoke.com and have access to a selection of free songs. As with the other portals, if you want more, you have to pay. In that case, it's $ 3 a week or $ 40 a year.

9. There are free karaoke songs here

You can find many karaoke files in KAR format on the Internet. The easiest way: google it Karaoke, songs, download. Before downloading, however, you always have to check whether you are allowed to use them, i.e. whether they are license-free pieces.

A good source is freekaraoke.com. On the portal you will find 1800 songs, sorted alphabetically, from Abba to ZZ Top. There are dozens of free karaoke songs to download from karaoke-version.de, you have to register for them. You can also buy many other pieces there. Another source of songs to sing along to is karaoke CDs, which you can buy in stores.
