Is textile technology better than a pharmacy
Study courses in the field of pharmacy
The Pharmacy Faculty comprises interdisciplinary courses that deal with the development and manufacture of drugs. Chemistry and biology as well as medical topics form the basis for the content. Important sub-areas deal with the structure and properties of active ingredients (pharmaceutical chemistry), biological or natural active ingredients (pharmaceutical biology), the manufacture of preparations (pharmaceutical technology) and the effects of substances and poisons (pharmacology and toxicology).
History and origins
The preoccupation with remedies and poisons goes back to the beginnings of mankind. So it is not surprising that pharmacy is one of the oldest academic sciences. However, pharmacy was a branch of medicine for a long time. That only changed slowly towards the end of the 17th century. Nevertheless, it took a few decades for pharmacists to receive their first scientific training. These were initially offered by the chemical institutes of some universities. After the state prescribed a degree for pharmacists in 1875, independent institutes for pharmacy at universities developed from this in the 1920s.
Which courses are there in the Pharmacy Department?
The pharmacy department is very specialized. The universities and educational institutes offer very similar courses in terms of content. Pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, but also pharmaceutical science are very closely related in terms of content. Courses such as Pharmaceutical Biotechnology or Pharmaceutical Chemistry also overlap, at least initially, strongly with the main course in Pharmacy.
What are the options for studying pharmacy?
The courses in the Pharmacy Department are almost exclusively subject to a numerus clausus. Applications for the study places are only possible through the Foundation for University Admissions. Due to the large practical part of teaching, the courses are, with a few exceptions, purely face-to-face courses where the presence of the students is required. The course in pharmacy ends with the state examination; other courses such as pharmaceutical sciences are designed as bachelor's degrees. Postgraduate courses usually end with a master’s degree.
There are very few dual study programs within the department. One of these is the pharmaceutical technology course, which leads to a Bachelor of Engineering degree. This course at the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences is very much geared towards the needs of the chemical industry. There are tuition fees.
Very few educational institutes offer distance learning within the pharmacy department. This does not include the basic course in pharmacy, but primarily post-graduate courses. For example, students at the German University for Continuing Education in (DUW) can achieve a master's degree in Drug Research and Management.
For whom are courses of study in the Department of Pharmacy suitable?
The courses in pharmacy are very demanding. They are interdisciplinary and include, among other things, biology and chemistry as well as medical, mathematical and technical knowledge. This results in a broad field of learning that students have to master. Helpful properties include:
- strong interest in chemistry, biology, physics and medicine,
- great eagerness to learn and commitment to further training,
- Fun with formulas and mathematical calculations,
- Inquisitive spirit,
- Enjoy laboratory work,
- very precise work,
- technical understanding,
- Stress resistance.
Are there any special costs in the pharmacy courses?
Although the students regularly have to contribute to the cost of chemical substances, glass containers and other accessories for their pharmacy studies, there are no significant additional burdens compared to courses in other departments. The material costs including books and copies amount to around 100 to 200 euros per semester, depending on the university. In addition, there are semester fees and in some federal states students may have to pay tuition fees. In addition, private educational institutions charge special tuition fees.
