# How many minutes are there in each hour

### Day, week, month, year

You can divide a year into months and days.

1 year = 12 months = 365 d

A leap year occurs every four years and has 366 days.

It doesn't have 30 days every month, but you always count on 30 days in tasks.
The months of January, March, May, July, August, October and December have 31 days. The months of April, June, September and November have 30 days. February has 28 days (29 in the leap year).

Why are there leap years?
If the earth rotates around the sun (1 year) it does not need exactly 365 days, but a little longer. The calendar year is therefore adjusted every 4 years by inserting a day.

### Conversion of time units

You can see that the times have rather "crooked" conversion numbers: 24, 60, 7, 365. That makes the calculation a bit more cumbersome. That's how it's done:

Examples:

• You want to know how many seconds are 2 minutes and 40 seconds. 1 minute has 60 seconds.
So: 2 min 40 s = 2 ∙ 60 s + 40 s = 160 s
Conversion factor: 60

• You want to know how many minutes and seconds are 320 seconds. 1 minute has 60 seconds.
So: 320 s = 5 ∙ 60 s + 20 s = 5 min 20 s
Conversion factor: 60

• How many years and months is 95 months? 1 year has 12 months.
So: 95 months = 7 ∙ 12 + 11 months = 7 years 11 months
Conversion factor: 12

1 d = 24 h

1 h = 60 min

1 min = 60 s

1 year = 12 months = 365 days

95: 12 can't you solve that fast? You can also divide in writing!

### In everyday life

Often you talk about a quarter or half an hour. How many minutes is that? • A \$\$ 1/4 \$\$ hour has 60: 4 = 15 minutes.
• Threefold: A \$\$ 3/4 \$\$ hour has (60: 4) ∙ 3 = 45 minutes.
• Half an hour (\$\$ 1/2 \$\$ hour): 60: 2 = 30 minutes

Example:

• You want to know how many minutes is \$\$ 1 1/4 \$\$ an hour. (One full turn of the minute hand + \$\$ 1/4 \$\$ turn)
1 hour has 60 minutes. So: \$\$ 1 1/4 \$\$ h = 60 + 60: 4 min = 75 min
Conversion factor: 60
