Robert Lewandowski is one of the most famous and successful athletes from Poland. He was born onAugust 21, 1988 in Warsaw and grew up in nearby Leszno. From the beginning, sport played a central role in his life. His father Krzysztof worked as a sports teacher, as did his mother Iwona, who also played for the first division club AZS Warsaw and was also in the national team.
"Bobek", as he was called as a child, played volleyball, table tennis and trained in judo. His teachers thought he had what it takes to be an athlete, but he chose football. At the age of eight he joined Partyzant Leszno. For seven years he played in the youth department of Varsovia Warsaw. From 2005 to 2006 he played for Delta Warsaw, still switched to competitor Legia Warsaw in 2006, there, however, in the second team; the officials were not convinced of his efficiency, and after a long injury his contract was not renewed.
After his father's death, the aspiring professional footballer moved in with his sister Milena, who he says raised him. He dedicated his first goal at the 2012 European Championship to her.
The next stop was the third division team Znicz Pruszków, where Lewandowski scored 15 goals in the first season, becoming the top scorer and helping his club to rise. The following season he scored 21 goals in 32 games and was named top scorer again, this time in the second division. In June 2008 he signed a four-year contract with Lech Posen. His first goal came in the UEFA Cup qualifier against Chazar Lenkoran. Lech Posen won the Polish Cup this season and also won the Polish Super Cup against Wisła Krakow in the same year.

The investment quickly paid off for BVB: Lewandowski scored his first goal for his new club on the 4th day of the Bundesliga against FC Schalke 04. Overall, he scored eight times in the 2010/11 season, although he was mostly only used as a substitute. When BVB regular Lucas Barrios was out for a long time due to an injury, Robert Lewandowski was able to play in every game in the starting line-up until the winter break.
