Why should we be addicted to PUBG
PUBG - How a new idea changed the gaming world

PUBG went from a mod to a world hit. We look back on a game that defined the genre of battle royale games.
While the gaming world was still busy with the biggest multiplayer games of 2016, including high-profile players like Overwatch, Titanfall 2 or Battlefield 1, PUBG kicked off an absolute revolution in March 2017.
What started as a mod by Irish game designer Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene was to change the world of multiplayer games forever: Battle Royale games are a guarantee of success four years later. The veteran was followed by Apex Legends, CoD: Warzone and how they are not all called. We take a closer look at the exciting history of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG for short).

PUBG: From early access hit to global success
Brendan Greene has been working on a modification for the shooter ArmA 2 since 2011, based on the Japanese film classic "Battle Royale" from 2000 - an enormous success for the Irish game designer, who two years later for the successor ArmA 3 a revised version already followed.
A little later, Greene moved to South Korea, where he was supposed to work as Creative Director for the internal studio PUBG Corporation on an independent battle royale game - the birth of PUBG.
On March 23, 2017, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds launched its early access program on Steam and generated sales of $ 11 million in just three days. Just two weeks later, the game cracked the milestone of one million copies sold, while up to 89,000 players were simultaneously on the servers.
And these unbelievable numbers were just the beginning: Even today, almost exactly four years later, PUBG is an indispensable part of the gaming world as a pioneer of the battle royale genre. In the meantime, the title has arrived on almost all major platforms and only recently cracked the unbelievable mark of one billion downloads for the mobile offshoot.
Broken, bugged, dearly loved: the beginnings
"I'm addicted to this broken, incredibly ugly game," wrote gaming journalist Sean Hollister on Twitter in June 2017, and like Hollister, millions of gamers around the world did too.
At the start of Early Access in March 2017, PUBG began to take the gaming world by storm, because PC gamers had never played anything like it before. And that although the early version was anything but clean.
After all, the title, developed within four months, had more bugs than all the Starship Troopers films put together - but the players, critics and, above all, influencers and streamers were never bothered by it.
The final PC version of PUBG was released in December 2017, at the same time the multiplayer hit was published in the Xbox Game Preview on the Xbox One and also sold like sliced bread on the console: within just three days, over a million copies wandered across the digital shop counter.
In addition, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds won several prizes in 2017 and was named “PC Game of the Year” at the 35th Golden Joystick Awards and “Best Multiplayer Game” at The Game Awards 2017 - a total of nine other awards should be up to now to follow at the end of 2018.

PUBG and success through marketing
Influencers and streamers saw PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as the perfect game for their Let's Play videos and developer PUBG Corporation recognized this marketing strategy, which was new for its time, at an early stage and relied entirely on the power of influencers. An experiment that should pay off (and another milestone where many games are emulating PUBG to this day):
After just three months, the title had sold more than five million times, and by the final release in December 2017, 30 million gamers had already played PUBG.
In 2018, the developers also gathered 40 well-known streamers - including Tyler "Ninja" Blevins and 40 pro gamers in Berlin to collect prize money totaling one million US dollars for a good cause at the PUBG Invitational Charity Showdown - a huge one Variety show and fireworks effects were included.

PUBG over the years
Originally, PUBG started with just one card. At Bwginn, players fought for survival on the fictional 8x8 kilometer island of Erangel. In the course of time, however, many more maps were added.
For the final release in December 2017, Miramar was joined by a much more compact map (4x4 kilometers), later followed by Vikendi, Sanhok, Karakin, Paramo and the first PvPvE map Haven, which not only added new environments, but also brought very fresh gaming experiences with them.
In 2018, PUBG landed on the PlayStation 4, and at the same time the mobile offshoot on iOS and Android became a mega-hit: for its three-year anniversary, PUBG Mobile only recently cracked the one billion downloads mark.
Even today, almost exactly four years after the original release, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is extremely popular. In February 2021, an unbelievable 447,000 players were still cavorting in the PC version at the same time - an end to the hype about PUBG is far from in sight.
