The Food in the Philippines is not very popular, at least not as much as, for example, the thai cuisine. One reason is that there aren't that many different, and most importantly, exciting dishes here. Even if there are quite a few delicious Filipino dishes, most of them are kept very simple. Nevertheless, in this guide I will tell you everything you need to know about Filipino cuisine, where you can best eat and which dishes should definitely be tried.

Good restaurants in the Philippines

Outside of the tourist areas there is also the risk that the meat is not fresh and that you spoil your stomach.

Good restaurants can be found almost everywhere in the Philippines, but in those where everything fits, the prices are correspondingly high. Most of the good restaurants in the Philippines are located in the large malls, such as the Ayala Mall, which can be found in every major city. You can also eat well in the SM malls. Often, however, you only have to go to one of the fast food chains, because there are more than enough of them here. I am briefly introducing the most popular ones to you.


Andok's is a fast food chain in the Philippines, which offers almost all the typical Filipino dishes. The ambience is typically fast food, but the dishes are tasty and clean. As they have the largest selection of Filipino food here, I can recommend this place to everyone.

Army Navy

Army Navy is also a typical fast food chain, which mainly offers Mexican dishes such as burittos, quesedillas, burgers, etc. The dishes are freshly prepared and taste very tasty, but are not really cheap. A burrito costs 210 pesos here.


Jollibee is a very popular fast food chain, especially with the locals. Mainly fried chicken and spaghetti are offered here. Personally, I don't like Jollibee that much, but you can stop by for a snack every now and then.

Typical Filipino dishes

Adobo is a very popular dish in the Philippines, which you can get almost everywhere. It is a bit reminiscent of goulash and in most cases is served classically with rice. Adobo is probably also the national dish of the Philippines.

Adobo is prepared a little differently everywhere and can optionally be pepped up. You can use different types of meat, stir in coconut milk, add mushrooms or even turmeric.

Pancit Bihon

Pancit are noodles with meat, soy sauce, garlic, vegetables and vinegar. In most cases, a lime is also served, which you can make yourself or not. Personally, I find the taste better with lime. The dish is somewhat reminiscent of Chinese cuisine. You never do anything wrong with the dish, as it is tolerable for everyone and also tastes very tasty.

Pancit Canton is the same dish, but the thicker egg noodle is used here.


Lechon is nothing more than a suckling pig. This dish consists of a whole pig (or cow) and is filled with spices and rice while it is cooked slowly over the fire. Lechon is especially prepared in villages or at festivities. But you can often buy a piece of Lechon on the streets as well. Meat lovers will love it!


Tapsilog is rice fried in garlic, served with a fried egg and dried beef. However, there are numerous variations such as: Porksilog, Bisteksilog, Chiksilog, Hotsilog. But I can't say where all the differences lie. The best thing to do here is to ask in the restaurant, they can tell you exactly.


Sisig is one of my favorite dishes in the Philippines, which I have really learned to love. It suits my taste exactly, which is why I advise everyone to try the dish once. Here meat, in most cases pork cheeks, is seared with a variety of ingredients and then served with rice and a vinegar sauce. To round off the whole taste you can set a limit. Traditionally it is served in a banana leaf or sizzling hot.

Bicol Express

Bicol is a stew with pork, coconut milk, shrimp paste and lots of chillies. It is also one of the hottest dishes in Filipino cuisine. But if you can eat Thai food, you can easily create Bicol Express. The Filipino cuisine is otherwise not spicy.


Silog is a typical breakfast in the Philippines. But don't be surprised, because the dish consists of meat, rice and a fried egg. You can put together your perfect breakfast with a few other ingredients: with meat of your choice, usually tapa (cured beef), you have tapsilog, with fried bangus (milk fish) bangsilog or with longganisa (sausage) lonsilog. Daing na bangus

Daing na bangus is a fresh fish which is served in vinegar and with rice. Often vegetables or tomatoes are added on top. A welcome dish in the Philippines for seafood lovers. Personally, we didn't like the taste. It looked a bit like a cheap canned fish. Absolutely not to be compared with the grilled fish in Thailand ...


Bulalo is a beef stew. It's a light-colored soup made by boiling beef shanks and marrowbones until the collagen and fat in the clear broth have melted. Bulalo comes from the southern Luzon region of the Philippines.


Sinigang is said to be a popular and good soup with vegetables and meat. I tried the dish too and I love it! The taste is very good, even if it takes a bit of getting used to. The soup is a little sour. But it all depends on the restaurant where it is prepared.

Halo halo

Halo-Halo is a famous Filipino dessert and delightful refreshment. As a refreshment, it is best eaten during the summer season. It's a mix of jackfruit, saba banana, red beans, kaong, and chickpeas. Other ingredients are macapuno, pinipig, white sugar, condensed milk and crushed ice on top, with ice cream, leche flan and ube.


Balut is a hatched chicken or duck egg. There is a chick under the shell. You can already see feathers and beak and have to chew on them a little harder. A piece of the shell is first removed, the liquid is drunk, and then the chick is eaten. If you like, you can put salt and soy sauce into the hole in the bowl beforehand.

Allegedly, the taste differs very little or not at all from an egg. With all my love, but even if I am very open and curious, I had to pass this dish!

Typical Filipino drinks and spirits

The Filipinos also love to drink when you are thirsty. Basically, they are always available for a small party. With the number of good cocktails, rum and Filipino beer, it's no wonder. You too should try the typical Filipino drinks and their rum.

Mindoro Sling

The Mindoro Sling is a very well-known cocktail which is famous for the island of Mindoro. On Mindoro there is also the popular place Puerto Galera, where you can get cocktails on every corner. This is punched with plenty of tanduay rum and orange juice as well as other fruit juices. The whole thing tastes very refreshing, but quickly leads to a hangover the next morning. It should therefore be enjoyed with caution;). The prices for a Mindoro Sling are between 250 and 300 pesos.

Tanduay rum

Tanguay Rum is a very popular rum, especially with the locals. One reason is certainly the low price, because the bottle costs only 140 Peso. Well, tastes argue about taste. One likes it, the other doesn't. If you enjoy drinking rum, then you should definitely try it. The small bottle with 300ml costs only 60 Peso. If you don't like it at all, nothing is broken. The locals will certainly be happy about it.

Don Papa Rum

Since we have already arrived at the rum, another really good tip. The Don Papa Rum also comes from the Philippines. However, this is a very high-quality rum known worldwide. At 1400 Peso, the bottle is also significantly cheaper than in Germany. Liquor lovers will appreciate it because the taste is really top notch!

And what goes perfectly with a good rum? Filipino cigar. Manila cigars have a tradition that dates back to the late 16th century when the Philippines were Spanish colonies. Accordingly, their main market was the Spanish motherland, but connoisseurs in other parts of the world also valued the fine art of the Filipino cigars.

The cigars of the Flor de Filipina brand are processed to a particularly high quality. The gentle Filipino tobacco types "Sarah" and "Isabela" give these cigars an elegant and light aroma. The Flor de Filipina Long Filler are hand-made as Puros and have an extremely good price-performance ratio.

Smoking ban in the Philippines!

DANGER!In the Philippines there is a nationwide smoking ban in all public areas! Smoking is only permitted in specially marked areas for revenge. Also in hotels, provided they have a smoking area. Failure to comply will result in a fine of around € 170 or up to 6 months imprisonment! But tourists will only give in to the cash register. However, you shouldn't take the smoking law lightly.

San Miguel beer

The typical San Maniguel beer, which is known and loved throughout Southeast Asia, also comes from the Philippines. I'm really not a beer fanatic and I don't really like any at all. The San Miguel Light is an exception, however. This is particularly tasty and also has a very good taste. If you like beer, you should definitely drink a San Miguel once, especially since it is almost cheaper than water here. A can in the supermarket costs around 30 pesos, a bottle just under 40 pesos. Here the prices differ slightly depending on the region.
