According to the latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of non-religious residents has more than doubled since 2000. Christianity is on the decline in Switzerland, while supporters of Islam are steadily increasing.

The percentage of non-religious residents increased from 11.4% in 2000 to 24.9% in 2016. A third of these "non-believers" described themselves as atheists, a quarter declared themselves to be agnostics (unsure whether there is a God or not).

Among Catholics, 26% attend church services between six and 12 times a year. Evangelicals are the most pious: 51% pray every day, 34% even several times.

Muslims, on the other hand, practice the least: 46% said they had never attended church services and 40% said they had never prayed in the past 12 months. Only 12% attend common prayer once a week and 17% pray almost every day.

Women are more likely to believe in the metaphysical than men: 58% believe in fairies or supernatural beings, compared to only 37% for men. More than half of the women surveyed believe that people have psychic powers.
