What does the Bible say about tattoos

What does the Bible say about tattoos / piercings? Is it a sin for a Christian to get a tattoo or a piercing?

The Old Testament law commands the Israelites: “And you shall not make an incision in your flesh because of a dead person; and you shall not make etched writing on yourselves. I am the Lord. " (Leviticus 19:28) Although believers are no longer subject to Old Testament law these days (Romans 10: 4; Galatians 3: 23-25; Ephesians 2:15), the fact that there was a commandment against tattoos should tell us make thoughtful. The New Testament says nothing about whether or not a believer should have a tattoo.

As for tattoos and piercings, a good test would be to determine whether we can honestly and in good conscience ask God to bless this particular activity for His own good causes. “Whether you eat or drink or do anything, do everything for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). The Bible doesn't forbid us to have tattoos or piercings, but it also gives us no reason to believe that God wants us to have tattoos or piercings.

Another aspect to consider is modesty. The Bible instructs us to dress modestly (1 Timothy 2: 9). One aspect of dressing modestly is making sure that whatever should be covered with clothing is covered. But the main meaning of modesty is not to attract attention. People who dress modestly dress each other in a manner so as not to attract attention. Tattoos and piercings are not demure.

An important principle of scripture on issues not specifically addressed in the Bible is that if there is room for doubt as to whether it pleases God, then it is best not to. “But everything that is not of faith is sin” (Romans 14:23). We must remember that our bodies and souls have been saved and belong to God. Although 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 does not directly relate to tattoos or piercings, it gives us a principle. “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; now glorify God with your body. " This great truth should have real meaning in relation to what we do and where we are going with our bodies. If our body belongs to God, we should be sure that we have clear “permission” before we put our tattoos or piercings on it.
