Is DigitalOcean cheaper compared to AWS EC2

The most popular web hosts of successful websites

  1. Home
  2. The most popular web hosts of successful websites

It is exciting to see which host are using the largest and most famous websites in Germany. For this purpose, I analyzed the 10,000 .de domains with the most visitors and determined the hosting company behind them. You can find the most popular providers in the following graphic:

The above statistic is a good indicator if you are looking for a reliable web hosting provider yourself. Because these 10,000 pages not only have a high number of visitors, they also often earn (a lot) money with their website. Accordingly, good, reliable and fast web hosting is important for them. So you can use these statistics to see which providers are suitable for you.

Of course, not every provider is immediately recommended for beginners. Some of the providers mentioned have specialized in high-performance hosting and are only available to very large websites with millions of visitors.

Below is a brief profile of the providers.

Table of Contents

Hetzner

Hetzner is by far in first place. Since the start of the ranking, however, Hetzner's market share has been shrinking, while the cloud providers Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and DigitalOcean have gained significantly in market share.

Hetzner operates two of the largest data centers in Germany, one in Nuremberg and the other in Falkenstein / Vogtland in Saxony. Hetzner's core business is dedicated servers, for which Hetzner is known for its quality and comparatively low price. Since large websites often have very high resource requirements, corresponding computing power is necessary.

Hetzner also offers shared web hosting, but the provider is less well known for this. I analyzed these tariffs in more detail in the article Hetzner Experiences - Webhosting.

Amazon AWS

Amazon Web Services (AWS) are also becoming increasingly popular in Germany for hosting large websites. Amazon Web Services offers all kinds of services for providing large web applications. However, shared web hosting is not part of the offer. You can find out more about AWS in the article Amazon EC2.

1&1

1 & 1 has a strong presence in the shared web hosting business and claims to be the largest web host in Europe. I tested 1 & 1 in detail in the article 1 & 1 experiences - web hosting. The recommended configuration costs 4.00 euros / month.

Well-known large pages at 1 & 1 are 4fansites.de (approx. 2 million views / month) or donnerwetter.de (approx. 2 million views / month).

All-Inkl.com

I tested All-Inkl.com in detail in the article All-Inkl.com Experiences - Webhosting. The recommended configuration costs 7.95 euros / month.

Personally, I like to use All-Inkl.com for some website projects, because the performance and service is right. All-Inkl.com is a good provider, especially if you want to operate many domains. Since the start of this ranking, All-Inkl.com has also won several new top 10,000 websites.

Well-known large sites at All-Inkl.com are emp.de (approx. 2.9 million hits / month) and expertentesten.de (approx. 2.2 million calls / month).

DomainFactory

I tested DomainFactory in detail in the article DomainFactory Experiences - Webhosting. The recommended configuration costs 4.99 euros / month.

DomainFactory (like Host Europe) has been owned by the US company GoDaddy since 2017. Unfortunately, sensitive data has been processed by an external service provider from Ukraine at DomainFactory & Host Europe since 2018. This has led to many protests from existing customers and many websites from the top 10,000 rankings have switched to other providers. I can also use DomainFactory & Host Europe for concerns about data protection do not recommend.

Well-known large sites at DomainFactory are jameda.de (approx. 5.3 million views / month) and inside-handy.de (approx. 3 million views / month).

Host Europe

I tested Host Europe in detail in the article Host Europe Experiences - Webhosting. The recommended configuration costs 4.99 euros / month.

Host Europe has been owned by the US company GoDaddy since 2017. Unfortunately, sensitive data has been processed by an external service provider from Ukraine at DomainFactory & Host Europe since 2018. This has led to many protests from existing customers and many websites from the top 10,000 rankings have switched to other providers. I can also use DomainFactory & Host Europe because of concerns about data protection do not recommend.

At the beginning of the ranking, Host Europe was in second place, behind Hetzner. Since then, however, a large number of top websites have switched to another provider. This is a clear alarm signal.

Strato

I tested Strato extensively in the article Strato Experiences - Webhosting. The recommended configuration costs 4.00 euros / month.

Well-known large sites at Strato are obi.de (approx. 11.6 million hits / month) and marktcom.de (about 1.6 million hits / month).

In the shared hosting area, Strato is controversial, mainly because you have to try your luck at the service hotline if you have questions and, unlike with smaller providers, you cannot write to the technician directly. Strato only includes 1 SSL certificate for a domain (without subdomains), and domains cannot be registered with external providers and used with Strato. Therefore, I would rather not recommend this provider.

Mittwald

Mittwald has existed since 2000 and has been able to improve its position significantly since the start of this ranking.

Mittwald offers both shared web hosting tariffs and very good managed vServer / managed server tariffs. You can find more details about Mittwald in the Mittwald test report.

OVH

OVH is a French hosting provider and is one of the largest hosters in Europe. OVH operates 27 data centers around the world and is mainly known for dedicated servers and virtual servers. Shared web hosting tariffs are rarely used by OVH in Germany.

Google Cloud

Similar to Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google offers a cloud computing platform. 45 of the top websites are now using the Google Cloud, e.g. Zalando.de (approx. 17 million views / month) or holidaycheck.de (approx. 16 million views / month).

The Google Cloud does not offer shared web hosting, only corresponding cloud computing. I tested the offer in this article: Google Cloud.

Netcup

netcup has existed since 2008 and looks after over 50,000 customers. In the last few years the popularity of Netcup has risen steadily and has improved by several places over the years.

Well-known large pages at netcup are posylka.de (approx. 200,000 hits / month) and unicum.de (approx. 760,000 hits / month).

I find the shared hosting offers from netcup very convincing and are also my personal recommendation for an inexpensive start. The recommended configuration costs 1.99 euros / month. You can find more details about netcup in the netcup test report.

Alfahosting

Alfahosting has existed since 1999 and, according to the company website, looks after 200,000 customer contracts, which makes it one of the leading German hosting companies. In recent years, Alfahosting has also been able to expand its popularity with successful websites.

I tested Alfahosting in detail in the article Alfahosting Experiences - Webhosting.

PlusServer

PlusServer specializes in managed hosting and does not offer ordinary shared hosting. Well-known pages on PlusServer are e.g. finya.de (approx. 10 million hits / month).

Professional host

Profihost has existed since 1998 and is rather a smaller provider with 14,000 customers. 40 of the most successful websites are hosted at Profihost.

Well-known large pages at Profihost are Gesundheit.de (approx. 4.9 million hits / month) and volksversand.de (about 440,000 hits / month).

Profihost offers shared hosting (from 20.23 euros / month), special shop hosting (from 29.75 euros / month), managed servers (from 69 euros / month) and dedicated root servers.

DigitalOCean

DigitalOcean is a cloud computing provider. In contrast to Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, DigitalOcean focuses on small to medium-sized companies. The range of functions is significantly smaller, but clearer and cheaper than the large cloud computing providers.

DigitalOcean is enjoying growing popularity on German websites. As before with AWS / Google Could: DigitalOcean does not offer shared web hosting. Instead, vServers can be rented there and operated with their own software.
