  • According to a UN study, a large majority of people have prejudices against women.
  • Nine out of ten people are - at least partially - biased, according to the analysis by the UN development agency UNDP.
  • Around half of respondents from 75 countries think men are better political leaders than women. And 28 percent of respondents think it is justified for a man to hit his wife.

According to the study, the greatest prejudices against women are in Pakistan, Qatar, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Jordan. The countries with the lowest number of people with prejudice were Andorra, Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway and New Zealand.

Surveys from 2010 to 2014 were analyzed. Switzerland was not included in this period. In the last investigation, it ended up in the middle: More than every second Swiss had shown themselves to be biased in at least one field.

Men dominate in top positions

The current report also identifies another trend. Although an alignment was successful in certain areas, men continued to dominate in top positions. This can be seen in the still relatively low proportion of women in parliaments. In relative terms, however, this is significantly larger than the number of women as heads of government - only ten out of 193 countries are led by a woman.

Although a lot has already been achieved in terms of equality in many areas, gender-specific differences are often still all too obvious, said the UNDP employee responsible, Pedro Conceição.

  • Comment from Klaus KREUTER (SWISSKK)
Such “studies” would have to be started more according to continents, countries and religions. In my whole life I have never had a problem with women that I couldn't have had with men, and I have rather admired strong women.
You shouldn't go over it with the lawnmower method.

Technically speaking, we live in the 21st century, consciously in the Middle Ages.

Study - well and good. And what exactly does the "need for action", as some commentators call it, look like?
If grievances are discovered, something should be done about it. Quotas for women seem to be counterproductive.
