Mount Everest: India wants to remeasure the highest mountain in the world

Mount Everest is to be re-measured this year. This was confirmed by the head of the Indian survey of India, Swarna Subba Rao, on Wednesday for the German press agency.

With the remeasurement of Mount Everest, India wants to end speculation about whether the highest mountain in the world could have shifted during the severe earthquake in 2015. "It would also be a good exercise to mark the 250th anniversary of our agency," said Rao, head of India's Survey of India. Survey of India was founded in 1767 under the British occupation of India.

In April 2015, a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit the Indian neighboring country Nepal, killing more than 9,000 people. This triggered speculation as to whether Everest, which is partly in Nepal, could have changed its position - or even got smaller. However, according to the US Geology Department, USGS, Chinese measurements indicate no change in elevation of the mountain.

The Indian authority announced that a team of experts would climb the mountain and measure its height using the GPS navigation system. At the same time, other teams would aim for the summit from different positions and mathematically calculate its height. "By using both methods together, we will end all speculation," said Rao. © dpa
