Why should I study music therapy

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

to the Master’s course in Clinical Music Therapy

question What is meant by the phrase “completion of at least three years of university studies”?
answer
In the new system of study programs, this formulation means a bachelor's degree. However, all relevant qualifications such as a diploma, 1st state examination or university of applied sciences diploma continue to apply. For foreign bachelor degrees, due to the different school and university systems, it must be taken into account that the three years of study refer to the period after the Abitur.

question Is there an age limit? Could it be that I graduated too long?
answer
No

Questions about the admission requirements

question I didn't get an overall grade for my first university degree. Is that really necessary? What can I do?
answer Yes, this is necessary because the overall grade is important as the minimum grade for admission and as an assessment for the ranking list. Please contact the university that issued your certificate. The overall grade usually contains weightings that we cannot measure, so we need the assessment of the university that issued the certificate.
If necessary, calculate an average grade yourself from the individual grades and have this confirmed by the university from which you graduated.

Group A

question Does this group also include my university of applied sciences diploma in music therapy, e.g. that of the university of applied sciences in Heidelberg?
answer Yes

question Does this group also include a university of applied sciences diploma or bachelor's degree in music therapy acquired abroad?
answer Yes, if the study program after the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) lasted at least 3 years and comprised at least 180 ectps.

question Can the internships completed in such a course be credited to the master’s course?
answer Basically yes. The extent to which crediting is possible will be decided on a case-by-case basis after the start of the course. A decision before admission is not possible.

question Can the self-experience gained in such a course be credited beyond the 20 hours of self-assessment in the master’s course?
answer Basically yes. The extent to which crediting is possible will be decided on a case-by-case basis after the start of the course. A decision cannot be made prior to admission.

question My first music therapy degree was four years and included more than 180 ecpts. Can further modules or module components be taken into account?
answer Basically yes. The extent to which crediting is possible will be decided on a case-by-case basis after the start of the course. A decision before admission is not possible.

question Can I also do a bachelor's degree in music therapy at the WWU?
answer No, unfortunately we cannot offer you such a course. However, you can take the music therapy bachelor's degree in nearby Enschede (Netherlands), with which there is a direct cooperation. Or you can choose one of the group B music education courses offered by the WWU as part of music education and the music academy.

question Can private training and further education in music therapy replace this admission requirement?
answer No, unless you can also provide evidence of a relevant university degree. Then you can apply for a decision on a case-by-case basis.

question Are the corresponding special education and curative education courses also recognized?
answer Yes

question Will the aptitude test that I passed in a comparable master’s degree in music therapy at another German university also be recognized as proof of practical music qualification.
answer Yes

question If my musical requirements are not such that I can pass the aptitude test for one of the courses in group A and B, is it a realistic way to try one of the courses mentioned under C?
answer This is only recommended to a limited extent, as you have to provide evidence of a music practice qualification, which is mentioned under A and B, for admission Degrees is comparable. You would also have to acquire this qualification parallel to your studies (or afterwards).

question Why do I have to prove these practical music qualifications for the Master in Music Therapy?
answer Studies at the WWU Münster are designed in such a way that the musical training is completed and only with regard to the musictherapeutic Requirements will be modified and expanded. The seminars on improvisation, for example, serve this purpose. In this course you will no longer receive any instrumental lessons, no voice training and no lessons in the analysis of music that is created in music therapy. We must therefore assume all of this as a qualification.

question How can I provide the required proof of my musical practice qualifications?
answer For example, you can contact a university at your place of study that offers one of the courses listed under A and B and ask there whether it is ready to examine you. The scale of the test must be one of those mentioned under A or B. degrees e.g. the practical examination in music education.
You can also have yourself checked by us. For reasons of capacity, this should be the exception. If you wish, send us your request for such an examination with the following documents: curriculum vitae with a detailed musical career, literature played in a major and a minor subject or two equally well played instruments or Singing. Status of your skills in harmony theory, form theory, ear training and your knowledge of music history and how and through what you acquired this knowledge. A program of 20-30 minutes that you could play.

question I am a jazz musician, a rock musician ... Does my ability have to come from the field of serious music?
answer No, it is not necessary. You may even be particularly apt to improvise freely. Please provide us with your requirements in a comprehensible manner. The music-theoretical basis can also consist of, for example, jazz harmony theory, the history of rock, pop music, etc. However, you should be able to play unamplified instruments (e.g. not just electric bass), because this is necessary for music therapy practice.

question Can you write me what exactly I should play if I would like to be examined by you?
answer No, we ask for your understanding that we are not in a position to give you guidelines for all instruments and all musical styles on our part as to which musical level is specifically required. Rather, we ask you to take the initiative and to show that and to what extent your personal musical qualifications are comparable to the degrees mentioned.

Proof of a 6-week music therapy internship (at least 120 working hours)

(Admission requirement in groups B and C)

question Can I also complete the 120 hours - e.g. with a 40 hour week - in 3 weeks or in 4 weeks ...?
answer No. The period of 6 weeks is specified. It seems necessary to us for this kind of experience. The lower minimum number of hours should enable you to complete the internship with a music therapist who only has half a position. We would then recommend, for example, that you also use other offers of the clinic in order to get to know a work area intensively and from several perspectives.

question Can I spread the minimum number of hours over a longer period of time.
answer Yes

question Will a music therapy internship that I completed as part of my first degree be recognized?
answer Yes

question Is there a list of internship providers?
answer Yes. There is a nationwide list on the DMtG website
www.musiktherapie.de
Or you can ask in our internship office:
[email protected]

question Does the internship have to be done with a music therapist?
answer Yes

question What do I do if I have not yet completed the internship by the application deadline?
answer If you submit a certificate from the internship supervisor that you are expected to complete the internship by the beginning of October, your application can be considered for the time being. Please do not have any post-dated certificates issued because this is not permitted. You have to submit the final certificate without being asked.

Proof of successful completion of a self-assessment to check study motivation and suitability in the form of music therapy self-awareness (at least 20 hours)

(Admission requirement in groups B and C)

question Is there a group offer that I can fall back on?
answer Yes. You can find specific offers on our website under News and Studies

question Can this also be an individual self-awareness in music therapy?
answer Yes

question
Can this also be music therapy group self-awareness that I had at my home town or during my previous studies?
answer Yes

question Will a music therapy self-awareness that I have had for another reason and which therefore does not have the title “Self-Assessment” also be recognized?
answer Basically yes, if you have fulfilled this meaning in terms of content, i.e. helped you to find out that this is the right job for you. It will simplify the process if you have this subsequently certified by the music therapist with whom you have had your personal experience.

question If I want to look for something myself: Who is entitled to offer such a music therapy self-awareness?
answer All teaching music therapists recognized by the professional association,

List as pdf under http://www.musiktherapie.de/index.php?id=457
(If the link does not work; www.musiktherapie.de -> Association -> Advisory boards -> Professional advisory board: teaching music therapist)

and other experienced music therapists. If in doubt, you can ask us at the internship office to be sure that crediting is possible.

question What do I do if I have not yet completed the self-assessment by the application deadline?
answer If you submit a certificate from the teaching therapist that you will probably complete the self-assessment by the beginning of October, your application can be considered provisionally.
