Zurich (awp) - ABB Ltd has invested USD 10 million in the American company ECOtality. This is based in San Francisco and develops storage technology for electric cars, as ABB announced on Monday. With this step, ABB wants to expand into the North American market for charging stations for electric cars and support ECOtality in the field of energy transmission.
With this investment, ECOtality will continue to pursue its own expansion policy and finance the basic requirements of the Electric Vehicle (EV) project. As part of this program, which is funded by the US Department of Energy with 115 million USD, infrastructures for electric vehicles are to be created in 16 major cities in the USA.
In addition, ABB will be the preferred supplier of ECOtality in North America for power electronics and component parts. The two companies want to jointly develop charging technologies for electric vehicles in which the consumer interface and billing functions of the EV stations from ECOtality are used.
As part of the ongoing smart grid industry program, ABB is already involved in several projects in Europe that involve the integration of EV charging systems.
