Why are cows of different colors

Interesting and surprising things about the cow

  • Cows have an almost complete 360-degree view and can see all colors except red.
  • The natural lifespan of a cow is 20 years. Some even live to be up to 25 years old. The approximate age of a cow can be determined both by the teeth and the number of horn rings. In the dairy industry, they only live to be five years old on average.
  • Cows love to rest. A cow therefore lies down five to ten times a day and spends up to 12 hours resting.
  • Cows have a keen sense of smell. You can hear smells that are up to ten kilometers away.
  • Compared to human hearing, the hearing ability of cows and cattle is better in the low and high frequency ranges.
  • On average, a cow eats 50 to 100 kilograms of grass and spends around eight to 12 hours a day grazing.
  • Cows are very social animals. They can recognize at least 50 to 70 of their conspecifics and form close friendships with other animals in their herd⁷. Mutual licking strengthens the relationship between the animals and has a relaxing effect.
  • Cows drink a whole bathtub of water in just one day.
  • A cow's gestation lasts nine months, just like us humans. Cows only give milk when they have a calf.
  • Cows “moo” and use various gestures - the posture and position of the head, limbs and tail, as well as facial expressions - to communicate.
